FAQs
Why do you use WordPress for your site designs?
- BECAUSE WORDPRESS IS AWESOME!
- WordPress has amazing benefits for the designer and client. WordPress is web-publishing system with a shitload of wicked tools in the toolbox which if used correctly allow your site to have the same features of sites costing thousands of dollars.
- WordPress uses a theme based design. The developers favour a licence system that encourages makers of WordPress themes, templates and plugins to release their work for free.
- WordPress has no ongoing licencing costs.
- WordPress has almost no barriers to entry.
If you can type an email or compose a Word document then you can also publish a webpage using WordPress as it also offers a WYSIWYG what-you-see-is-what-you-get design interface. It really is easy and even if you do make a mistake WordPress can save page revisions allowing you to recover to a prior working page.
- WordPress can scale with your company. Other web designers that use a custom or bespoke content management system (CMS) may charge you hundreds of dollars just to add or edit a page.
- WordPress gives you the tools to develop a website or a company intranet.
Well known sites that are powered by WordPress:
The New York Times publishes over 50 WordPress powered blogs.
WordPress powers CNN.com blogs like the CNN Political Ticker.
About.com, one of the biggest sites on the internet, runs their guide pages on WordPress.
Flickr keeps in touch with their fans with the Flickr Blog.
If WordPress and themes are free, why should I hire you to use it for me?
You are hiring skill and knowledge plus a bit of artistic flair for good measure. I have invested countless hours working with WordPress and this allows me to quickly develop a site whereas someone new to WordPress, like any program or interface, has to get used to the basics first and spend some time learning from their mistakes.
Are you in the market for a budget website? There are many many eager online sites wanting your business. The ‘budget’ end of the market can seem a little confusing as there are almost no standard inclusions in this industry.
Some things to look for in budget designers:
Do they charge content upload fees? I found a site offering $395 sites but in the small print they charged $100 just for four pages of text + images! The same site wanted $200 for a photo slideshow on the homepage, something I can get as a free WordPress plugin at no cost to me or you.
Do they lock you into using their servers and their CMS (content management system) ?
It can be a real pitfall if you don’t realise that if anything goes wrong and you decide to leave for another host & design-firm, you may not be able to take any of the already created content with you. I use WordPress which is supported by any decent web-hosting company and this gives you the security of knowing that you can take your site with you should you decide to host things yourself.
Do they retain copyright over your website?
